Adam, It sounds like you can isolate the problem to the the steering column someplace since this happens when you put the key in and turn. It sounds like a short or a bad ground maybe even a bad Ignition switch. It's weird it knocks out your clock almost like you disconnected the battery. That's why I think it's a short or a bad ground.I have a golf mk4 2001 petrol manual and it has this steady light always on and it does also make a beep when I turn it on.
